Perugia - Umbria Jazz for Pilsner-Urquell Birra Peroni
“The apparatus is superb, even in the lights there is dexterity”
Barrionuevo, 1654
Umbria Jazz 2005 is probably destined to remain in the ideal roll of honor of the best editions of the festival ever.
A light scenography has been created a few times in the past, as seen in the concert spaces, Arena S.Giuliana, Rocca Paolina and Piazza 4 Novembre, combining light scenes with the Pilsner Urquell brand, the new main sponsor of Umbria Jazz.
After a thorough inspection of the spaces to be “illuminated” and the decision of how many Stark 1200 machines to be installed, Paolo Buroni entrusted me with the work of installing the machines and managing the lighting set design for the entire period of Umbria Jazz.
I organize a team of 3 technicians (students of a lighting technician course we are holding in Umbria) for the assembly of 22 Stark 1200s located in the above-mentioned spaces.
I get involved directly, I make all of myself available, my professionalism, availability, passion, time, energy, feelings.
Without loving one’s work, without feeling involved, one cannot possibly expect to involve students in an emotional journey such as the one necessary to set up a show.
The set-up is challenging especially in the Rocca Paolina where the Stark projectors are positioned inside 4-meter-high ditches and buttresses, the Rocca Paolina, medieval construction, is one of the symbolic monuments of Perugia, it was necessary to avoid being intrusive in architectural respect with the passage of the power and signal cables of the machines so we opted for a linear path in suspension along the perimeter of the walls so that passers-by, visitors and concert spectators only notice the beauty of the lighting scenes projected inside of the Rocca.
The idea proposed by Paolo Buroni was to create an “Emotional Anbient” with a multi-projection of images and synchronized music projected on the vaults and on the stone walls that would catalyze the interest of visitors. A continuously and slowly changing setting that would capture the interest of passers-by by welcoming them and encouraging them to stop and linger, immersing them in this “Fantastic Ambient”. Using the Starks and multivision images it was possible to realize this project respecting all the strict constraints of the superintendent with a “virtual ecological” intervention fully respecting the ancient structures.
From 8 to 17 July 2005, we admired thousands of spectators who came to Umbria Jazz, building new sensations around them, new emotions with lighting scenes projected into the streets and squares of Perugia that become stages for events.
